Pai Gow Poker is similar to traditional poker with a few twists to make it a unique, challenging version of the old casino standby. The game is played with a 52-card deck and a single joker card. The banker deals out seven-card piles to every player, and the objective is to create two separate poker hands, a five-card hand and a two-card hand, that will beat the banker's hands. The hands are categorized as a low hand and a high hand; the five-card hand must be higher than the two-card hand.
The card values are equal to traditional poker, with a few minor exceptions. The joker is used as an ace or 10 in Pai Gow Poker, and unlike traditional Poker, the second-ranked straight follows an A2345 pattern.

A Pai Gow Poker player faces several strategic decisions: how best to set a hand and how much to bet. When setting a hand, you want to play the highest two-card hand possible without going over the value of your five-card hand. Commonly, it is a set of pairs that wins the two-card hand, and a duo of pairs does the job for a five-card hand. There are plenty of other set-ups to bear in mind, and the learned player will carefully consider other strategic moves, like splitting a pair between the two hands.
